Sam Knight Quintet.

The Sam Knight Quintet is a band consisting of current and former students of the Guildhall School of Music. Combined, the band members have played in many different settings from Jazz-Fusion to Duos, and they all bring these experiences into the Quintet, creating unique and vibrant colours of sound.

The band plays original music that has been influenced by the compositional works of Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland, Wycliffe Gordon, Seamus Blake and Chris Potter. The quintet takes advantage of its line-up and compositional style, creating high-energy and exciting music that spins and weaves traditional jazz into a new setting.

Blessed with a strong compositional identity, with Sam Knight’s beautiful, soaring saxophone at the centre, this ensemble provides a captivating slice of emotionally charged contemporary swing

The Goodbye Look.

‘Musical anti-heroes writing good songs, with faces that long for the golden age of radio’ – that’s how The Goodbye Look describe themselves with a wry smile.

With a name lifted from the seminal Donald Fagen solo album, ‘The Nightfly’, the bar has been set. The intention is great songwriting, production, arrangements and natural performances; the execution is everything. Cue re-writes, late nights and some fights. Throw in the best UK musicians on offer to fill in the gaps and you find yourself listening to a sound indebted to the classic songwriters of the past, fused with the production of today. Four chords just aren’t enough.

Having released two singles; the funk infused ‘I Can’t Stop’, and the singer-songwriter tinged ‘Build Behind Our Eyes’, The Goodbye Look’s latest single ‘If I Could’ is a dark and brooding meditation on the three-word slogans that blind people from the truth. With jazz soaked harmony, and a chorus that has as much in common with the classic pop melodies of the 90s as it does with the meandering, laconic explorations of Miles Davis; there’s enough to keep your mind stimulated and satiated at the same time.

“One of the best bands I’ve ever heard… Tight and tasteful with superb arrangements. They blew me away!”

Standard Procedure.

Set up by Sam Knight, Standard Procedure was a band consisting of Guildhall School of Music Graduates and current students. Standard Procedure was a jazz quartet based in London, UK with a focus on the ‘dark corners’ of jazz.

From ferocious rock grooves to lyrical folk ballads, their aim was to convey emotion and encapsulate the tradition of jazz in a fresh, new way! Their influences draw from musicians and bands such as ‘Ian Carr’s Nucleus’, Miles Davis, and Julian Siegel & Phil Robson’s ‘Partisans’ as well as many more!

“Sam is a wonderful writer and improviser who is fast becoming a significant, recognised voice on the UK scene. He is without doubt an important artist on my ‘keep an ear out for …’ list.”
